When you watch the film I AM PATRICK, you might think that because Patrick is considered a Saint, he was afforded a unique access to God. That he could hear God’s voice in a way the common person never could. In fact, our modern culture seems to support this idea that hearing from God is the exception, not the rule. Something reserved for biblical characters and the super spiritual.
In this scene and others, Patrick has a vision and hears the voice of God give him guidance. As we look at Scripture, we see that this is the expectation for all believers, not just those from biblical days or highly revered. Author John Eldredge puts it this way, “Many good people never hear God speak to them personally for the simple fact that they've never been told that he does. But he does—generously, intimately. ‘He who belongs to God hears what God says’ (John 8:47)”.
Prayer is not simply a one-way discussion you have with God, but an opportunity for him to speak to you as well. Prayer opens the door to connecting with God intimately, including hearing from God. Let your prayer have some moments of silence that allow God an opportunity to speak. Ask questions and give him time to answer. Like learning any new discipline, it takes time. But he promises to speak to you.
