Tame Your Anger

One of our most toxic emotions is anger. Unexpected events, difficult relationships, crowded conditions, highway traffic, a slow computer… these are all things that can bring on bouts of anger.

The emotion isn’t a bad thing in and of itself. Even Jesus became angry. But when we behave poorly because of our anger—or when we sin as an expression of it—that’s when it becomes a problem. That’s when we need to learn to take control.

Today, you will find out how to stop acting out in anger and instead submit yourself to God’s way of controlling this emotion.

"Be Slow to Anger" by Jeff Schreve

Pray
Jesus, You know how to be angry with righteous anger, yet not sin. Help me know when my anger is righteous. Help me determine when my actions are sinful and in which areas I should be slow to anger.

Reflect
Do I let anger rage out of control, or am I slow to anger?

Respond
If you feel anger rising, step back and try to determine the cause. Are you angry because you aren’t getting your way? Are you stressed? Are you fighting against God? Understanding the root of your anger is the beginning of controlling it.

Remember, there is a difference between being angry and acting angrily. You must understand the source of your anger, and if it is righteous, then you need to deal with the situation at the root of the issue so you don’t act out. However, if your anger is because you aren’t getting your way, or you are fighting against God, then you need to learn to control it. Another emotion that can often get the best of you is discouragement—that deep disappointment or loss of enthusiasm because life isn’t going the way you planned. In the next post, learn how you can let go of discouragement by encouraging yourself with God’s Word.
