Did you know that tithing and generous giving are not really the same thing? Tithing is like the training wheels of giving—and it is a great place to start if you aren’t giving at all. Through your tithing, you’ll see the miracle of God’s economy where giving more to Him makes it easier to live on less. As you are faithful in your tithing, God will be generous towards you, which allows you to be more generous in giving wherever it’s needed—even beyond your tithe. If you start with tithing, allow God to work in you to raise your standard of giving until you can generously give on every occasion.

2 Corinthians 9:11
Pray
Jesus, I give You authority over my finances. Please help me be aware of my standard of giving, and help me learn how to generously give—beyond my tithe—on every occasion.
Reflect
Am I tithing? If I am, do I also practice generous giving beyond my tithe?
Respond
If you are not tithing, this is the first place to start on the road to generous giving. If you are tithing, start praying about where and how God wants you to start giving more generously.
While tithing is a good place to start, growing in your giving is what God desires from all of us. As you cut expenses, or get raises, be sure to focus on raising your standard of giving instead of your standard of living. Since God is the source of all of our blessings, it is only right to return those blessings in the form of generosity, which the next post explains.
