Big Prayers Are Powerful
More Than a Check Mark

As we go through the ups and downs of life, our prayers will sometimes mimic the cycle of urgent to boring and then back to urgent again. When life is in crisis, our prayers are desperate and specific. However, when life is good, we sometimes have the tendency to treat prayer as an item to be checked off on a daily task list. God wants to be more than a check mark on a list. He wants to hear from your heart; He wants to help you with everyday life as much as He helps you in your emergencies. He wants to intercede in the issues that make your heart ache. With this in mind, take a look at how you can jump-start your prayer life by examining the desires of your heart and by partnering with God through daily prayer that is far from boring.

"Jump Start Your Prayer Life" by Beth Jones

"The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working]." James 5:16, AMP

Does your prayer life need a jump start? Feel a bit apathetic or like you're just going through the motions?

Prayer is not supposed to be drudgery; it's supposed to be a heart-felt, faith-filled conversation with God Almighty! One of the best ways to jump start your prayer life is to get your heart connected to your prayers. When we pray obligatory, dutiful, mental prayers -- it's just boring, religious work. When we pray heartfelt, earnest, passion-filled prayers -- it's an adventure!

So, here's a simple way to get fired up about prayer again. Ask yourself these questions: What topic or desire is front and center in your heart? In other words, what is cooking in your heart? What does your heart long for? If God would do anything for you, then what does your heart want to see heaven do? Identify the things that your heart "feels"!

What does your heart feel compassion towards? Is your heart moved with compassion for someone facing surgery; for a lost son or daughter; for kids of divorce; for the salvation of your husband or wife; for a real revival in America; for young girls caught in prostitution or the sex-trade; for those who don't know who they are in Christ; for the military men and women; for the homeless, for those addicted to drugs, gambling or porn; for the homeless, those with AIDS, those in Hollywood, those in government, those who have lost their jobs or those in your neighborhood. What things are front and center in your heart? It's easy to pray "heartfelt" prayers when we identify who and what God has put in our hearts.

Once you identify and locate the things in your heart, take some time to see what God has already said and promised us in His Word about those things…and then pray accordingly. Pray "earnest, heartfelt and continued" prayers for God's will to be done in those things and you will see tremendous power being made available in those areas by God Almighty!

Say This: "Father, thank You for jump-starting my prayer life today! I ask You to help me locate the desires You have placed in my heart-of-hearts and help me to pray according to Your Word about these things. I am so glad that prayer is not a boring ritual, but a heartfelt conversation with You! Thank You for the tremendous power that will be made available as I pray! In Jesus' Name. Amen."

Pray

God, You have placed desires in my heart... things we are both passionate about and things that need Your attention. Help me be aware of those desires, and guide me in my prayers for those things.

Reflect

What am I most passionate about? Who or what is God putting on my heart so I can intercede in prayer?

Respond

Pay attention to what pulls at your heartstrings today. These are the things that God wants you to pray about. Then, let your compassion compel you to respond in prayer.
