Read All About It

Bible Reading: Psalm 119:89-96

Forever, Lord, your word stands firm in heaven. Psalm 119:89

You can't always believe what you read in the newspapers, especially the weird ones at the checkout line. The following headlines showed up in newspapers –real newspapers, in fact:

  • Iraqi Head Seeks Arms
  • Police Begin Campaign to Run Down Jaywalkers
  • Teacher Strikes Idle Kids
  • Drunks Get Nine Months in Violin Case
  • Stolen Painting Found by Tree
  • Local High School Dropouts Cut in Half
  • Man Struck by Lightning Faces Battery Charge
  • New Study of Obesity Looks for Larger Test Group
  • Typhoon Rips through Cemetery; Hundreds Dead

You don’t have to look far in a daily paper to find slip-ups, even slap-you-in-the-face mistakes like those. But a newspaper is produced in a rush and gets tossed into the recycling bin the day after you buy it. It’s here today, gone tomorrow. It’s not something you can build your life on.

But the Bible is something to trust your whole life to. It is “God-breathed.” It isn’t here today, gone tomorrow. It was here before you arrived and will be here after you make your exit. Why? Because it is God’s Word. You can read the paper for daily information, but for error-free direction and inspiration, you need your nose in the Bible.

Dr. Henrietta Mears wrote in What the Bible is All About, “Do you come to the Bible with such eagerness? Do you read with that purpose and persistence? The Bible is not a book of texts -it is a story- it is a revelation, to be begun and pursued and ended as we start and continue other books. Don’t trifle with the Bible…. We must come to it in a commonsense fashion. Believe that every book is about something and read and reread until you find out what that something is.’”

Behind and beneath the Bible, above and beyond the Bible, is the God of the Bible. Whenever you open your Bible to read, you find the eternal, loving God waiting for you. And what he shows you will be totally true.

REFLECT: Why do you read the Bible? What are you looking for? Are you finding God?

PRAY: Tell God you want to get hold of him in a deeper way each time you read his Word.
