Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.” (Mark 12:29–30 nkjv)
All around us, every day, there is a constant battle for our minds. That is why we need to study the Word of God so we can know the mind of God. We need to know what He expects of us and how He wants us to live. You’re not going to learn that by reading the daily newspaper, listening to talk radio, or vegging out in front of the TV.
One of my favorite passages of Scripture is Isaiah 55:8–9: "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts" (niv). This is a beautiful passage that describes why the Word of God is so unique. So many things we read and hear in this life tend to be contrary to what God’s Word is saying. We need to immerse ourselves in the Word of God so we can get to know Him. It’s the only way we can love God with our minds.
