Here’s a Theological Shocker

Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.” (Matthew 24:35)

Here is something that may surprise you: heaven—as it is today—is temporary! I know that statement may rattle you, but I’m just quoting Jesus Christ. Listen to what He said in Matthew 24:35: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.” Christ could not be clearer. Heaven is temporary. Second Peter 3:7 adds insight as to why: “But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men” (nkjv).

This does not mean that when you die you don’t have eternal life. If you know Christ in this life, you have begun an eternal relationship with Him. And even though heaven, as it is today, is temporary, you do not lose eternal life. Your relationship with Jesus Christ is unending; it can never be lost.

So you may wonder, How can heaven be temporary? Well, in Revelation, Christ said that after He returns, the new heaven and the new earth will be one. So eternal life does not stop when you know Jesus, but heaven as it is now is temporary. As incomprehensibly wonderful as heaven is today, the new heaven will be even greater. Don’t miss it!
