Did you know that Christians are called to marry Christians? Why? First, it’s just common sense. If Christ is your priority and you marry someone whose priority is politics, music, work, sports, or anything other than Christ, in time you’ll find yourselves drifting apart. God’s practical instruction that Christians are to be bound with Christians allows us to be joined together in a deep relationship of love, respect, compassion, and understanding of mutual interest.
But that’s not all. If it’s important that Christians marry Christians, then it is just as important that Christians should seriously date only Christians! Why? Well, we tend to marry people that we date! Christians must be cautious about getting into serious relationships with those who are not committed to following Jesus. Determine their commitment up front. Don’t ask them if they are Christians—80 percent will say yes. Ask them what is most important in their lives and how they would describe their relationship with God. Their answers will reveal if it’s real.
Remember, when a Christian marries a non-Christian, he or she is choosing to put that unsaved person above Jesus by choosing to ignore God’s Word. But if you are a Christian who did this, God wants you to make the most of your marriage for life and seek to be a good witness to your spouse.
