God Is Our Rock

Read: Numbers 19:1-20:29; Mark 1:1-25; Psalm 56:1-13; Proverbs 11:8

It’s easy to get so caught up in our circumstances that we forget we have a loving and powerful Lord taking care of us. Situations that seem hopeless to us are nothing for God to handle.

The Israelites saw firsthand how God miraculously provides: the 10 plagues in Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea and the provision of manna, to name a few. In Numbers 20, however, the Israelites find themselves without water. Granted, to be without a source of water is a pretty big deal, a life or death situation. To them, death was better than wandering around the wilderness without water. Perhaps if they had paused for a moment and reflected on God’s past miracles they wouldn’t have freaked out on Moses. Despite their doubt, God provided for them yet again. With the strike of Moses’ staff, water sprang from a rock.

In Hebrews 13:5, God promises He will never leave nor forsake us. We can rest assured that He is in control and He will fulfill His promises to us. This knowledge should cause us to react differently to the seemingly impossible circumstances in our lives!

God’s past faithfulness is the best predictor of his future provision. God rebuked Moses for not trusting in Him to provide, and Moses ultimately lost the privilege of bringing the Israelites into the Promised Land. Let us not react to our circumstances in panic. Instead, let us stand firm, knowing that God faithfully provides for His children.
