Everything God made, including each one of us, was created to bring Him glory. To those who don’t know God, this makes Him seem like an egomaniac. But David, who wrote Psalm 103, understood why God deserves to be center of our attention and the object of our affection.
God alone forgives all sin, heals all disease, redeems life, crowns with love and compassion, and satisfies desires with good things.
No matter how tough life gets, David gives us a long list of reasons to be thankful. The next time we’re tempted to complain about our circumstances, like David, we should count our blessings instead.
We deserve none of what we’ve inherited as God’s children. Psalm 103:10 says, “He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.” Iniquity isn’t a word you hear often in 2012, but “our iniquities” are our grossly immoral acts. God’s compassion for us is more than we deserve, yet we so often rob Him of His glory by focusing on what we don’t have or on what others say is important.
Giving God glory—loving our families, neighbors and coworkers in a way that honors Him—is the only thing we can do in life that matters. It’s crazy how much time and energy we waste doing otherwise. Try reading Psalm 103 out loud, and pray that God would reclaim His rightful place as the object of your affection.
