From Fear to Celebration

Read: Revelation 1:1-20

I was a teenager the first time I tried to read Revelation. I thought it was crazy stuff and a bit scary. Even as an adult, John’s vision can be overwhelming. In verses 1:14-16, he describes Jesus as having white hair, blazing eyes, glowing feet and a double-edged sword coming out of his mouth. This not the brown haired, blue eyed picture of Jesus on most church walls.

Jesus revealed Himself to John this way for a reason. White hair represents Jesus’s wisdom and authority. Blazing eyes and double-edged sword suggest judgement and discernment. This picture of Christ may be scary to those who do not know Him, but for His followers it’s cause to celebrate. We serve a Lord who will return one day and conquer all evil.

Revelation is a message of hope and a reminder to share the gospel with those who do not have a relationship with Jesus, so they, too, can celebrate and not fear His return. How do you feel when you think about Jesus coming back? Who do you need to share the gospel with today?
