For His Name's Sake

Read: Exodus 5:22-7:25 & Matthew 18:21-19:12 & Psalm 23:1-6 & Proverbs 5:22-2

Psalm 23 is the kind of passage that is tagged on Christian coffee cups, notebooks and wall plaques. The numerous ways the Lord tends to us as our shepherd are familiar. But what about the reason why He behaves this way?

The psalmist says the Lord cares for us “for His name’s sake.” God is given many names throughout the Bible. Each name reveals an aspect of his dynamic character: Almighty, Everlasting, Righteous, Faithful.

Exodus 6 shows us what it means for God to do something “for his name’s sake.” God promises to deliver His people “for his name’s sake,” not because of anything they did or were going to do for Him. The multitude of first person statements God makes (“I will redeem”, “I will deliver”, “I will give”) assure us of this truth. God’s care was not based on what the Israelites did for God, it was based on who God is.

There is nothing we can do to earn God’s love, protection, provision or deliverance. He acts solely based on His character not our behavior. Today, thank God for who He is and that His love for us is not based on anything but His perfect character.
