Read: Colossians 3:2
As I hiked up the steep path, occasionally stopping to glance back and take in the colorful mountains and bright blue sky, I couldn’t help but reflect on my life. Oftentimes I trudge along the path keeping my head down, trying to get to the next big thing. I forget to look up and see the beauty of it all, the things I’ve been too selfish to see and the blessings right in front of my eyes. But in these moments of reflection, God reminds me that it’s all about perspective.
When I was young, wise people told me how important perspective is. But it didn’t mean very much to me. As I have gotten older and realize that God calls us to wise counsel, my perspective on perspectives has surely changed. Joyfulness at any moment depends on how you look at what you’re going through.
When I was hiking up that path I could have looked only down and focused on how much farther I had to go, or I could delight in the journey and everything there was to enjoy along the way. The choice was mine. God offers us a choice every day. The Bible says in Colossians 3:2, “Set your mind on what is above, not on what is on the earth.” He wants us to have an eternal perspective and realize that, as Christians, our joy is supremely in our focus and our focus should be zeroed in on what is above. But if we’re always looking down, we’ll never see it.
