In Luke 9, three men say they will follow Jesus wherever He goes. However, one man states that he must first go and bury his father. Another man asks to first go and say good bye to his family. These men, who claim to be ready to follow Jesus completely, are putting worldly obligations ahead of their immediate surrender to Jesus.
As Christians, we are not expected to clean up or complete a series of good works before we follow Jesus, and we should not let anything delay our decision to put Jesus first in our lives. Delayed obedience is disobedience. When the Lord calls us to follow Him, we must do so immediately and wholeheartedly. Surrender does not come after we take care of the messes in our lives or make sure our families understand our decision. Instead, surrender happens first, and in that surrender, we are able to fully rely on God and His promise that everything else will be taken care of.
