Read: Titus 2:1-15
I took my grandmother on a trip to Gatlinburg, Tenn., Instead of using a paper map to help us find the way, I depended on my GPS. My grandmother couldn’t get over the woman’s voice chiming in along the way. An annoying lady would repeat “recalculating” whenever I made a mistake.
At one point, out of frustration, I blurted out, “I hear you!”
My grandmother replied, “She can hear you?”
I was astonished that my grandmother thought the voice behind the GPS could hear me. “Be on your best behavior,” my grandmother said. “You never know who may be watching or listening.” I laughed to myself then tried to teach her how this new piece of technology works.
The exchange with my grandmother reminded me of how much each generation can learn from another. In Titus 2:1-15, Paul writes to a young pastor named Titus about teaching men and women of all ages to live righteously so we can encourage each other and set good examples for each other.
“Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God” (Titus 2:3-5).
Often I find myself saying, “I wish I knew that 10 years ago; it would have made my life so much easier.” From wiser, older women to the truth found in the Bible, the Lord has put so much wisdom in our paths. In many ways, the Bible is like a GPS for life. The better we are at listening and following its directions, the less time we spend recalculating.
I’m certain my grandmother never thought she would see the day when a small device could speak turn-by-turn directions in the car. I can’t begin to imagine the things I’ll be learning when I’m her age. But I do know this -- as long as my GPS is set on things above, I’ll never be led astray.
