My grandfather taught me a great deal about the maintenance and upkeep of cars. As a teen, he took me into the garage and showed me how to change spark plugs, fix a leak in a tire and top off antifreeze. Another wise tip he gave me was that pouring soda on a corroded battery would clean it and allow a few more years of life.
We usually don’t realize our battery is in need of attention until the car won’t start. Little did we know, that film of flaky mess is a big deal. It prevents the car from receiving the start-up power it requires. How many times are our spiritual lives like a car battery? After months or years of not attending to routine upkeep, we suddenly lose our connection. We feel out of touch with God, uninspired and lonesome. Perhaps we need to check for corrosion. Is unconfessed sin interrupting our relationship with Christ? It’s not always obvious, and it might require some digging. Remember, batteries reside under the hood.
Today, take inventory of your life and seek out what’s blocking a clear connection with Christ. When you find the corrosion, pour some soda on it by confessing and repenting. Psalm 51:16-17 says, “You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart. You, God, will not despise.”
