Read: Psalm 51:1-19
It’s no secret that the world we live in is full of impurities. We are daily faced with news of war, hate and crime. We pass 15-foot signs plastered with sexualized advertisements everywhere we go. It’s difficult to find a television show to watch or song to listen to that doesn’t include inappropriate language or ideas. Our culture is saturated with corruption, and its commonness has made many of us desensitized to it.
In Psalm 51 David gives us a prayer we can use in our own lives to stay aware and fight impurity. He asks God to give him a pure heart, a steadfast spirit of faithfulness and a willing spirit of service (verse 10). David begs God through prayer to allow the Holy Spirit to remain in him to guide and sustain him.
Once we accept Christ as our savior, our salvation can’t be lost, but we still have to fight temptation on a regular basis. Asking God daily to cleanse us and create a new heart in us helps us defend ourselves from falling into complacency with the world around us. God has given us the gift of the Holy Spirit to help us remain pure, faithful and full of joy. All we have to do is ask for it.
Reflect:
- What things have you become desensitized to? Ask God to reveal to you areas in your life in which you have become complacent.
- How often do you ask God for a clean heart and renewed spirit? Begin asking Him daily for restoration.
