How is your posture right now? Are you sitting straight or slumping down while reading? How does your posture change when you experience defeat or disappointment? How do you hold yourself up when you feel important and useful?
What if I told you that you are the church? Not just part of the body of Christ, but that you (and I and everyone else with Christ in their hearts) are the church? Would you stand a little straighter? Sit a little higher? Shine a little brighter? Be a little bolder?
Jesus tells us that we are His church. We are the salt of the earth. We bring flavor and seasoning to the drab palate of this world. We are the light of the world. We should shine brightest in the areas that are the most dingy and detestable around us. I Corinthians 3:9 even says that we are God’s fields, God’s buildings. We are walking, talking vessels—living branches of His kingdom here on earth.
We not only represent our church, but we also are sometimes the first image unbelievers have of the church. When they look at us, do they see God at work? Do they see compassion, humility, grace, and purity? Have the seeds planted within us sprouted and borne fruit for all to view? Do our attitudes and actions draw them and lead them into a place of interest and curiosity, so that their feet may eventually find their way to the actual doors of our church buildings? Are we a church that walks and talks?
