Read: Job 42
There can be no doubt that Job was a righteous man. God himself said as much to Satan in the beginning of the book! I never noticed it before, but Job lists his moral standards and track record in chapter 31. He leaves most of us in the dust when it comes to morality, compassion and energy. There is also no doubt that he had a relationship with God: God answered Job’s prayers (12:4), Job had considered God his friend (29:4) and God said that Job had a solid grasp on doctrine (42:7).
What I find interesting is the night and day shift in his worldview after he met the God he served. Throughout the book, we get to listen in on his discussion with his friends. Job says things like ‘God… has taken away my right’ (27:2) and a number of times he asked to meet God and argue his case. Compare the mindset behind these statements with his declaration in 42:5-6,”My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.”
We talk a lot about worship in the church and I think that very often, what we mistake for worship (the drums and the guitar, or the organ and the choir) has very little to do with a Biblical view of the subject. Consider the difference in Job’s worship before and after ‘contact’. After 30 odd chapters of religious duty and cold theology, Job really ‘sees’ God. His response is heartfelt awe, a total abandonment of his ‘case’ and abject humility. By these standards, I think we all need more ‘contact’.
