God's 24-Hour Helpline

“My soul yearns for you in the night; in the morning my spirit longs for you. When your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness.” (Isaiah 26:9, AMP)

You know you have it bad, really bad, when you’re yearning for someone in the middle of the night. No matter how hard you try to sleep, thoughts of them keep racing through your mind. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan (Sam and Annie) played out this scene in the 1993 hit movie, Sleepless in Seattle. Instead of tossing and turning in their beds, they would go to their computer and chat. Over time they shared more and more about themselves (their likes, dislikes, hopes, dreams, hurts, and disappointments). One day they discovered that in spite of the distance, and the fact they had never met face-to-face, they had fallen in love.

I’m certain that God had mixed feelings about this movie. On the one hand, He probably liked it and thought, “Now that people can see how this can work, even though they can’t see me, they will finally understand that I too, am here for them day and night, eagerly waiting to talk. I can’t wait to be with them and show them how much I love them.” On the other hand, it probably made Him sad as He thought, “Why can’t they believe I’m real and eager to chat?”

Like Sam and Annie, are you hurting and needing to talk? Do you need to tell God about your day? Run and grab your Bible in the middle of the night when you need company. Read God’s love letters (written to you long before IM and chat). After you read His Words, cry out to Him. Believe it when He tells you to reach out anytime, day or night. Believe Him when He says He will always answer your call. Unlike Sam and Annie’s story, this is real. God’s Helpline is available 24-hours a day. He loves talking to His children and eagerly awaits your call.

Lord, thank you for always being there for me when I’m sleepless and need to talk. I’m comforted by the depth of your love for me. Teach me to seek you. Through the blood of Jesus and in the name of Jesus I pray, amen.
