And Mary said, “Behold, the bond slave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” - Luke 1:38
Picture the scene: an angel had just informed Mary that she, a virgin, would become pregnant and would carry the Son of God. Not the sort of news a woman hears every day and certainly not the kind of news a woman in first-century Israel would welcome. She knew she would soon face the wrath and scorn of her family, friends, and society in general—not to mention the man to whom she was engaged!
She could have run away. She could have had an abortion. Or, like many unmarried pregnant women in that time, Mary could have taken her own life. But how did Mary respond? She chose a different path. What she said was, “I am willing to be a voluntary slave of the Lord. I am willing to be a servant of God. What God has said, may it come true!” What a woman! What a true profession of faith! She was truly the greatest woman who ever lived. Nothing any woman has ever done or will do is more important than what Mary did.
When you think of the Child she gave birth to—who He is and what He came to do—will you choose to follow the example of Mary and believe what God’s Word says about her Son? You will never truly experience Christmas until you do.
