Dare to Discipline
Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. (Hebrews 9:25-27 ESV)
Do you have something in your life that unmasks some lack of discipline in your life? It could be any number of things – your waistline, laundry hamper, bank account, a fuzzy growth in your vegetable drawer – or dozens of other tell-tale signs.
This morning, as I was cramming to meet yet another deadline, I was keenly aware of the stack of untouched school books, laundry in the washing machine that had been brewing for days, and the unhealthy cold bowl of carbs I was scarfing down for breakfast. It was hard for me to remember the Lori who worked out daily, was a meticulous housekeeper and typically ate seven servings of fruits and veggies before noon. My word, where had that disciplined woman gone? Best I can figure, she’s wedged somewhere in the pile of goodwill items stacked in the basement awaiting delivery. All areas of my life had slowly gone sideways and the thought of putting things back into order was more daunting than trying to match the socks in my drawer.
Thankfully, the good Lord knows our weaknesses and gave us self-control as one of the fruits of His Spirit. So before we even begin to consider changing our schedules or instilling self-discipline in our lives, we need to stop relying on us. Instead, we need to seek the Lord and start our days on our knees with a daily dose of the Word and complete surrender to His-control. As we ask Him to set things in order in our lives, He will nudge us to live lives that are not filled with chaos, but are productive and focused.
Father, we thank You that You never give up on us, Your children. Oh how You must shake Your heads at our messy lives! Help us to find order and peace at Your feet each day and may Your Holy Spirit instill in us the strength and order that comes from being controlled by You. Amen!
