Soak Him Up

Be a tree today. Plant your roots in His Word and Spirit, that your whole being would be watered afresh.

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified. (Isaiah 61:3)

I could never understand how or why we could be called trees. Not really flattering for a be compared to a tree.

But like the David Crowder song says: ‘Life’s like a hurricane, I am a tree, bending beneath the weight of his grace and mercy...’ What an amazing word picture, that we bend—not break!

The Bible has many tree references. We are to be like trees planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

A tree that does not get sufficient water will soon dry out and get brittle, fractures form throughout its trunk, weakening its structure. When the storm comes, it doesn’t bend, it snaps!

But, we, as Christians, when we are planted close to our source of Living Water, we are softened and made pliable. Even though there will be times of ashes, mourning and heaviness, He uses the times in these valleys to magnify his greatness as we learn to bend, bow, and praise Him through it all.

I remember a woman who lost her husband; her absolute best friend and partner. As hard as it was to let him go, and as obvious as it was that she missed him horribly, her face radiated beauty, joy and peace all through her beloved’s memorial service. How could this be? How could she praise Him through this storm?

The secret was that she was planted closely to the River. His Spirit was so filling her, there were no cracks or splits...she bent with grace as the wind blew but her foundation was solid; and the LORD was glorified. Be a tree today. Plant your roots in His Word and Spirit, that your whole being would be watered afresh. Soak Him up.
