Our Inheritance

It is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:5

Have you ever wished for an inheritance? Boy, I (David) have! But the closest Teresa and I have ever come to an inheritance was when we received some money from an unexpected source.

Each year our local newspaper runs the names of individuals who are entitled to collect money. I always check to see if our names are listed. One year, our son's name made the list. We were so excited! But how much was it? Where did it come from? It turned out his grandmother had started a savings account for him when he was born, and we'd forgotten about it. We were excited to collect our free, unearned, and undeserved twenty-eight dollars.

God gives to us in many ways, but His primary gift of grace is His Son. Even though we did nothing to deserve it, God demonstrated His love to us by sending His Son to die in our place. God loves us and wants a special relationship with us, but He can't have that relationship without payment for the sin in our lives. In fact, because of our sin, we deserve eternal separation from God. We deserve hell!

The only way we can have a relationship with God and avoid hell is by accepting the work of His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus came to earth, lived a sinless life, died on a cross, and rose from the dead. That death and resurrection pays the penalty for our sin. God considers Christ's death a substitute for our sin. God's free gift of eternal life in heaven is now possible through Christ.

This free gift is a perfect picture of God's grace. We did nothing to deserve it, and there is nothing we can do to earn it. It is a gift freely given by God. That's grace! That's our inheritance! All we have to do is, by faith, collect it.

In what ways can you and your spouse celebrate God's grace in your lives?

Father, thank you for so freely giving Your love to me and for me.
