Christ is a propitiation, reconciliation, and redemption. In the Old Testament, there was a concept called being a kinsman redeemer. A kinsman redeemer was one who rescued his relatives from trouble. To be a kinsman redeemer, one had to be a close relative, if not the closest, and also had to have the means to rescue his relatives. In the New Testament when the word redemption or redeemer occurs, we must not forget that to redeem someone in the Bible you had to declare yourself as the person's closest relative. This is exactly what Christ has done for us.
But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus (Rom 3:21-24 ).
Notice that in verse 24 stated that Christ performed a redemption that means he has declared himself to be our closest relative. Not only are we justified—we have been given Jesus as our closest relative.
