The promises of God and our Lord of Jesus Christ are so wonderful that our unbelieving hearts and our limited thinking often has difficulty grasping those promises. We need a true work of God to appreciate how deeply we are loved, how firm God's intentions are toward us, and how infinite God’s grace is. Paul prayed:
18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,
19 and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might (Eph 1:18-19).
What can we do to understand and appreciate the grace of God? We can do what Paul has done here. He has prayed that the eyes of our understanding would be open. We can do the same for ourselves and others. Why can we be confident that our prayers will be answered? We can be extremely confident because that is what God wants, and his power is devoted to opening up our eyes as we exercise faith and prayer.
