Evangelism Is a Priestly Service

00:00

When we look at the concept of worship in the New Testament, there are two parts to it. First is the attitude of worship which I will call delighting in God. Second, there are the acts of worship which belong to a priest. Those are the things we do for God. There is a particular Greek word that is used for that function. Paul used it in Romans 1:9.

For God, whom I serve as a priest in my spirit in the gospel of His Son, is my witness as to how unceasingly I make mention of you, (Rom 1:9)

He said that as he served in the gospel he was functioning as a priest. In a previous devotional we mentioned that giving the gospel is one of the five sacrifices that God delights in. This verse emphasized that same truth. Giving the gospel is something that God finds pleasant to listen to. When we give the gospel we mention His wonderful Son, and the noble things that He has done. This brings pleasure to God as it would to any father who has a wonderful son. But because He is God and the Father of Jesus Christ it becomes an act of worship and not just an act of human respect. God the Father likes to hear us talk about his Son especially when it is to a nonbeliever that Jesus died for.
