Clothes make the man or woman. Clothes in the modern world is a statement of status. In the ancient world they were a definition of status—you were your clothing. In the world of the Romans and Greeks, what you wore was prescribed by law and your clothes told everyone how significant you were, and how you should be treated.
Clothes not only may have made you look good, they also said where you fit in the culture. You were what you wore. Notice how Galatians 3 deals with our status before God: For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
We are clothed with Christ so we have the status of sons with God. This status obliterates distinctions, even gender distinctions as the next verse states:
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus (Gal 3:26-27).
God treats us as he treats his own Son. That is the standard of treatment our status in Christ receives. Our clothing in Christ brings God’s smile and embrace.
