When God Whispers

I love the words of David in Psalm 85: “I hear this most gentle whisper from One I never guessed would speak to me” (verse 5 The Message). David first heard God whisper when he was a young shepherd, and afterward he heard God’s voice everywhere. He described God’s voice as the “most gentle whisper.”

I believe that when God speaks, it always begins as a whisper. God is whispering to His sons and daughters, and each of us longs to hear His words. We were created to hear our Creator.

The Magnificent One speaks to us in tender undertones, underscoring the harsh reality of our human life. Thus our invitation to be quiet: “Be still, and know that I am God!” (Psalm 46:10 NLT)

I am certain that God the Most High and Creator of all things knew His children would be arrested and calmed by His very whisper. I find the idea of a God who whispers more surprising than a God who shouts. Just as deep calls to deep, a God-whisper is the echo of the Creator resounding within His children, the created.

Do you need calming today? Remember, Elijah looked for God in the wind, the earthquake, and the fire, but he heard Him in the whisper (see 1 Kings 19:12). When Elijah heard that still, small voice, he stepped out of his cave and listened to what God told him.

Come close and whisper your answer. I really need you.
Psalm 55:2 The Message

Hushed tones carry profound and intimate pronouncements to those who will quiet themselves enough to hear. In this stillness our spirits hear the adoptive whisper of a Father.

Seek the voice of your Creator. Quiet yourself and allow the Holy Spirit to speak into the depths of your soul. What is He speaking to you?
