In Medieval times, it used to be that families would create family crests. These crests were used to symbolize the nature of the family. They may have been farmers, warriors, kings, or craftsmen.
We’ve lost sight of the idea of family crests (although perhaps we should reconsider the practice). The family crest was really about the idea of family identity.
Pastor and author Rick Warren tells about his father, also a pastor, who went on countless mission trips to build churches. He explains that the symbols of his father’s life would include a Bible and a hammer.
It makes you think, what would the symbols of my life look like? If I could make a time capsule and send it on to generations that I’ll never see, what would I include in that time capsule to reflect my identity, my family’s identity?
Would it include the keys to my car, a picture of my house, or even my clothes? I’d like to think that like Rick Warren’s dad, it would certainly include a Bible. However, I’d like to think it would also include a question mark – because I have always questioned things. There is one more thing that I would like it to include: a blueprint. A blueprint represents the idea of vision, strategy, and/or a plan. I don’t know, but these are my musings right now. I think I need to consider this a little more; what symbols would you choose to reflect your identity?
