What We Treasure Is an Indication of What We Love

In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus taught us: “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

To be honest with you, I seldom think about the future treasures that God has promised to His children. While it is true that God will have treasures awaiting us in our eternal home, my focus on this verse is in the present. Jesus explains that all we have -- everything that we call treasures today -- are temporal.  They are so short term that they can be eaten by a little moth.  They can be rusted by humidity.  Or they can be taken from you by a thief.  In essence, Jesus is saying that all our stuff is just stuff.  And our stuff  should never be viewed as having greater value than serving Him.

If we place a high value on things, then we are saying that our things are more important to us than our relationship with the Lord.

Jesus clearly promises that when our hearts are about expanding His Kingdom (not my thingdom) that we are actively storing up for ourselves riches of some sort that we cannot comprehend for the day we are translated out of the body and into His presence.  Think about it.  It is an incredible offer.
