The Lord watches over the strangers .... —Psalm 146:9 (nkjv)
I glanced at my to-do list. “Call Cindie” glared back at me. I sighed. A couple of years ago I’d met Cindie at a friend’s wedding. At that time Cindie was living in another state. When she and her husband retired, they moved to Montana and bought a home a few miles down the road from me. We hit it off, except for one thing: She was retired and I was working, so I didn’t have much time to spend with her.
Suddenly, a horse’s shrill whinny pierced the afternoon. I looked out the window. The neighbors across the road had put a horse in their pasture. The poor herd animal was alone and screaming for company. Suddenly, thundering hooves rocked the ground as my horses ran full blast around the corner of the house. Sliding to a stop at the fence, they lined up, smelling the new horse. I listened as they nickered greetings, and all afternoon my horses stood bunched in the corner near her.
The next evening, when I drove home from work, I noticed that the horses still stood in the corner by their new friend. That’s so nice to welcome a stranger. Even though you can’t be in the field together, you can keep her company. It’s too bad more people aren’t that way.
