If you're like me, you want to change the world. You dream about providing freedom for those in bondage and clean drinking water for every man, woman, and child on the planet. But then someone informs you that there are 27 million slaves in the world and that 783 million people don't have access to clean water. You freeze and walk away because what can you do to really make an impact?
But here's the truth: You are capable of making a true difference in this world. You are the change this world needs. And like most things, generosity often starts small. Pastor Andy Stanley, founder of North Point Ministries, once said in order to make an impact in this world you must "do for one what you wish to do for everyone." Although you can, you don't have to go to Africa or Eastern Europe to make a difference. There are people all around you who might need food assistance, freedom, or even a simple hug. It's easy to get overwhelmed and bogged down when you look at all the needs in the world, but sometimes the best place to start is right in your home or community today.
So here's a quick list of ways you can make a positive impact in the lives of those around you.
12 simple acts of generosity to change the world:
- Help someone who's lost find their way.
- Buy a flower for someone who looks a little down.
- Do some baking for a loved one.
- Write a note of thanks to someone who has changed your life.
- Sing a song to somebody you love.
- Buy the stranger behind you a cup of coffee.
- Leave a generous tip.
- Visit an old friend whom you've lost touch with.
- Buy someone's newspaper for them.
- Call a family member you haven't spoken to in a while to say hi or tell them that you love them.
- Open the door for every stranger you see today.
- Take someone's picture and tell them they're beautiful.
We hope this list encourages you to love others and spread generosity throughout your day. Never underestimate the life-changing power of small acts of kindness.
