You’ve likely noticed how desperately your wireless devices search for a signal until they find a familiar one to connect with. The process doesn’t take long, though it sometimes seems far too slow. While you’re waiting next time, consider how your device is an illustration of your heart. You’re searching too, trying to pick up the signal of God’s voice and hear what he says. And the process can seem far too slow. But once you begin to hear, you finally feel connected again.
The signal is always there. God is always speaking; he even calls himself the Word. The problem is in the search of the receiver. We sometimes pick up false signals and wonder which one is his. Our problem isn’t hearing; it’s discerning what we’ve heard. We want to know we’re actually hearing from him.
Ask him. The only way to make the connection between his voice and your heart is to ask—daily or even hourly—to hear him well. He will teach you (John 16:13-14). You don’t need to fear; his ability to speak to you clearly is much greater than your ability to get it wrong. It may be a process, but it’s a certain one. Be persistent in your asking and your listening. The Word is speaking and wants to connect with you even more than you want to connect with him.
