No one would ever think of running an operation involving several people and several thousand dollars without having meetings.
Yet, we do it all of the time in our families.
When was the last time you sat down as husband and wife, mother and father to look over your plans as a family?
Don’t have time?
Do you have time to work through all the wrong assumptions and unmet expectations the lack of communication causes?
That’s what I thought.
Here’s my suggestion: set a family meeting. Find one hour every week to sit down and discuss your family. Is there anything more important? Then give it the time it deserves. No phones, no television, no interruptions—just your undivided attention for one hour.
During this hour you can talk about:
- Calendar
- Finances
- Kids
- Plan dates with each other
- Holiday plans
- Plan vacations
- Household chores
- Plan meals
- Points of frustration
- How the other is doing…
As you can see, you won’t run out of topics. When Jeannie and I do this, we look like executives planning a major project. We have our calendars out and files for various things. But it brings us on the same page. We know what’s going on in each other’s lives. We understand each other’s expectations and needs. You won’t believe how many arguments you’ll avoid by having these meetings.
So, what are you waiting for? Get it scheduled. Your marriage and family are worth it.
