In Genesis 27:34 there is a striking statement from a son to his father. “When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, “Bless me, even me also O my father!”
Jacob, the younger of the two brothers, along with his mother conspired to gain the blessing of Isaac. When Esau learned that Jacob had received the blessing of their father, it devastated him. He knew that a father’s blessing was the key that would release him to prosper.
Following the life of Jacob through generations, we observe that Jacob and his family multiplied in number, became exceedingly wealthy, remained healthy, did not experience plagues and sickness, conquered their enemies, and ruled in their land for generations. For Esau and his family, we find the opposite was true.
Children today, adult and adolescent alike, although they may not verbalize it as Esau did, are experiencing the same internal heartfelt cry. They intuitively seek and know they need the blessing of their parents.
It’s easy to observe when that blessing is present. Children whose parents blessed them tend to prosper in their adult lives and children whose parents did not tend to languish. Why, because God established the power of blessing; and He meant for it to function in every family on earth, including yours.
As parents, we need to learn the why, when, where and how of The Blessing. It can change the lives of our children forever. It’s is God’s primary mechanism of imparting His image of identity and destiny to children. I’ll be writing more about that in my next blog.
