The Opposite of Spiritual Growth

When we talk about growing spiritually, we’re talking about a forward progression in our lives in terms of our intimacy with Jesus, our understanding of God’s Word and will, and our obedience to His desires for our lives. But it is also possible to go backward, to retreat, and to lose ground. The first Psalm opens with this warning,

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers… - Psalm 1:1 (NIV)

Notice the downward progression. When we choose a path of disobedience, we slow from a run to a walk, then we stand still, and eventually we sit with our growth entirely stunted. You may be reading this and feeling that you’re at a stand-still yourself. What should you do? The psalmist continues…

but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night… - Psalm 1:2 (NIV)

Go back to the word – that 66-book-long love letter from God’s Spirit to you and begin to explore all that He has in mind for you to know and experience. Particularly, see from His Word the lengths to which He has gone to remind you that you are planned for His pleasure, formed for His family, created to be like Christ, shaped to serve and influence others, and made for a mission.

Yep. You. So stand up and walk again.
