I was at our small group this past weekend when the question was asked “What would you do with $1 Million?” Everyone agreed that they would pay tithes first, but second on the list was vacation. It was almost unanimous! Everyone really felt the need to get away from work for an extended time away from the office.
Although most people are glad to have a job, especially in this economy, people feel the need to get away. On average, 30 days to just relax—maybe on an island or a cruise or some remote location was the need. Upon reflection, I wish I would have asked this question, “Do you experience God when you’re at work?” This, by the way, is a trick question. Once we accept Jesus as our personal savior a few interesting transformations happen.
First, our citizenship is changed. We become members of a royal nation and a holy priesthood. But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (1 Peter 2:9, NIV).
Second, God gives us a very specific job to every believer—our job is to make disciples. In a verse that we call “The Great Commission”, Jesus' parting words before he ascends into heaven are “All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20, NIV)
So why was “Do you experience God when you’re at work” a trick question? Because whether you’re in the office or on vacation—we still have clear direction as Christians to do what Jesus did—make disciples! In Luke 2:49 Jesus says didn’t you know “…that I must be about my Father’s business?” (KJV) The most important thing to understand about the work that God blesses is that our primary job is that of making disciples.
Start working enthusiastically! Understand who you really work for. Concentrate on building your character. Care about those you work with. Exceed what is expected of you. Expand your skills with continuous learning. Dedicate your work for God’s purpose.
