The Habit of Going to Church

When I was growing up, if you stayed over on Saturday night with my family, you weren’t invited to go to church with us on Sunday... it was assumed you must want to go and you were told what time to be ready to leave.

Going to church on Sunday was what my family did. No questions asked.

(Sure, you could ask—once. But the answer you'd receive would make sure you didn’t feel the need to ask again.)

There are reasons why this is important.

You never know which Sunday is going to be the one where something transformative will happen. You never know when a person’s need and the Word spoken will meet in such a way that will leave that person forever different. And because you don’t know, you need to be there every Sunday.

This is a point we often overlook, but our habits gradually shape us into the people we are. Like water running over rocks, the friction of it will gradually smooth the rock into its beautiful shape.

Let’s not look past the obvious. Joseph and Mary had a habit of going to worship, so they took Jesus to worship. Therefore, Jesus, as an adult, developed the habit of attending synagogue.

Do you want to be like Jesus? If you do, you have to do the things Jesus did. You have to develop the holy habit of attending worship.

After all, it’s our habits that define who we are and who we become.
