The Foundation of Faith

God speaks to us through His Word, and His Word is alive and active.

The Foundation of Faith

Faith has a foundation, a resting place. The Word of God is faith’s birthplace. God Himself is the focus of faith, and His Word is the way that He reveals Himself to us. His Word is the method by which He discloses His innermost thoughts; by His Word, His mind—His reasoning, His purposes, His desires—become accessible to us.

When you read the written Word, the Living Word speaks it to you. He speaks to you in present and specific ways, heart to heart. He presents His thoughts to your mind in a fashion that is tailored to your personality and experiences. For example, my friend Libby is an artist. Jesus speaks often to her through colors because she thinks a lot about colors. My friend Mary is a master gardener, and Jesus speaks often to her in gardening metaphors because she knows a lot about gardening. I am a left-brained logical person and Jesus speaks to me in logic and thought sequences. For all of us, He is right there in our present moment speaking life-altering truth in a direct transfer from His mind to ours.

Jesus is the Word of God. He is always speaking to you from within. He speaks the Scripture into a present reality. He speaks personal and specific words of promise to you. He creates in you the desires of God for you. “For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose” (Phil. 2:13). Jesus, alive in you, provides the firm foundation for your faith.
