When Samuel came to David’s house, not even David’s father could see the future king of Israel in his youngest son. David was not enrolled in the royal training academy for future kings. God’s chosen training ground and curriculum for David was unusual, even by Israel’s standards. But God used David’s time as a shepherd to develop David’s compassion, courage and faith, all qualities that David would need as king. When the time was right, God revealed David as the leader He had been preparing all along. What leadership qualities is God developing in you through your everyday life?
He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens; from tending the sheep he brought him to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance.—Psalm 78:70-71
