Pressing Into God

I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:13–14 NKJV

In order to achieve the high call of God for our lives, we first must acknowledge the fact that we haven’t yet attained it—that we are not perfected and must continue to pursue, change, and grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ.

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity.2 Peter 3:18 ESV

Many reach a comfort zone or plateau where they begin to maintain rather than press in. They set their personal standards by comparing themselves with others or by what they feel is adequate. At this point, they stop seeking God for who He is and begin to pursue the benefits of following Him. They may seek to build their status or their positions, or they may wish to increase their comfort or popularity. Whatever the case, the emphasis turns from God to self.

Have you found yourself becoming so enveloped in maintaining a level of success that you forget to stop and press into all God has in store for you? Are you growing in your career, reputation, or achievements more than you are growing in grace and revelation?

Choose to pause in the midst of this season and seek God. What is the high call He is asking you to pursue? How can you grow first and foremost in your knowledge of Him?

Take a few minutes to pray: Father, I thank You for calling me in Christ. Thank you for inviting me to press in and know You. Search my heart, God, and expose any motive or desire that does not honor You. Reshape my desires and reset my focus by Your Spirit. I want to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus. I set my mind and heart on You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
