Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. -Psalm 145:3-4
God’s greatness. It’s more than David could wrap his head around, and yet it didn’t hinder him from trying to put it to words. In Psalm 145 he praised the Lord for His unsearchable greatness, abundant goodness, gracious love, support, provision, nearness, and more. He poured out his praise in worship, and thanked God for the blessings of His name, power, kindness, and faithfulness.
God’s greatness. It’s more than our finite minds can fathom too, and yet it didn't deter GEMS Clubs from dedicating the 2013-14 season to focusing on our Great God! With our girls we studied His names, marveled at His ways and works, sang His praises, and thought about God more and ourselves less (John 3:30).
At the dawn of a new GEMS Season, what do we do with all that we learned and experienced? As we shift from one season to the next, what should be our response? David exemplifies a two-fold answer:
- Persist in praise! Although the season is a wrap, worshipping His greatness is forever! I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever. I will praise you every day; yes, I will praise you forever (v. 1-2). At the beginning of each day, fix your eyes on Jesus, asking Him to be central to all you do and say. Throughout the day, humbly walk with Him, directing all attention to Christ alone. At day’s end, meditate on His works, bask in His love, and give Him thanks. Repeat daily. Forever!
- Proclaim the message! The message of God’s greatness – of Who He is and all He’s done – is a message for all! The good news of His unfailing love, and salvation through His Son Jesus, must be shared. Tell the children! One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts (v. 4). Tell the world! He hears their cry and saves them (v. 19).
During the 2014-15 GEMS season we’ll do just that. The theme, Bring the Message, is based on Isaiah 6:8. God asks, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” Messengers God can use say with Isaiah, “Here am I. Send me!”
Where can you proclaim His great message today?
We have been chosen by the living and eternal God to be the walking, talking, living, breathing representatives of the greatest and most central news in the universe: the gospel of Jesus Christ. -Michael Kelly
