Our Personal Army

Scripture: Judges 7:1-9:21

"The LORD said to Gideon, ‘You have too many warriors with you.’" (Judges 7:2a NLT)

Do you have an army of warriors? A group of people who join you in the trenches of battle and cover you in the foxholes of life. We all need other powerful Christian soldiers to uphold us as we stand in the daily battlefield. If you aren’t currently surrounded by a few close friends, pray that the Lord will grant you those relationships. It may mean joining a small group, making some coffee dates, or moving out of your comfort zone. These relationships are so important to cultivate though to help you fight as you go toe-to-toe in battle with Satan.

These warriors lift us up with the Word, offer guidance when we face indecision, and hit their knees in prayer when we can't find our way through the battlefield. They remind us to persevere in our marriage, babysit our children so we have time to take care of our sick parent, or text a Bible verse and a prayer when we’re interviewing for a new job.

These friends are rare and oh-so-valuable, but sometimes God says, "You have too many warriors." You see, there are times when we turn to our fellow ‘soldiers’ instead of our Commander. We take pleasure in calling our friends to vent about life, but we neglect to pour our heart out to the Lord. We seek pity instead of prayer; an understanding ear rather than wisdom and truth. We look to them for comfort and support, rather than relying on God. He rebukes such behavior and reminds us: This battle is Mine. The glory goes to Me. You need no other.

While we can be thankful for our prayer warriors, it’s important to remember that there are times we need an army of many and times we only need an army of One.
