One Big Question

"Behold, children are a gift of the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward." —Psalm 127:3 NASB

Children are a gift. Those are words that hold the power to revolutionize your day, your week, and your child-rearing years.

This passage doesn’t say that children always feel like a gift or that they will always act like blessings, but it does call them a gift and a reward. We have a choice to believe that simple truth and to act on it or to chew on the alternative, that our children are a burden.

Choosing to see your children as a blessing (and it is a choice) rather than dwelling on the ways that they stretch, frustrate, and try you will change your attitude, which will spill over into your behavior, which will pour out into the climate of your family. I’m not asking you to tap into the power of positive thinking or to talk yourself into something to help you cope. Nope. I’m asking you to believe what God has already said: “Behold, children are a gift of the Lord.”

Whenever you come to a juncture in your day or in your larger journey as a mom, stop and ask yourself one big question: Are my children a blessing or a burden? Then allow God’s answer to determine your next move.

Action Step: Count your blessings.

Make a list of all of the ways your children bless you. From big things, like the feelings you get when they show you love, to little things, like the sounds they fill your house with . . . write it all down. Keep that list handy for days when your feelings trick you into thinking that your children are a burden.

A Mom’s Prayer: Father, thank You for my children. They are a gift with Your name on the tag. Help me to see them like You see them.
