Never Crushed

But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies (2 Corinthians 4:7-10 ESV).

When someone you love is in pain, there’s nothing you won’t do to try and stop it. It’s a crazy, unfair thing to watch a spouse or child suffer without being able to help them.

The one question that rings over and over again in our minds is, “Why, God?” Often on this side of heaven we may never understand or get that answer.

As hard as it is, I find comfort in knowing that my sweet loved one won’t be crushed, forsaken or destroyed. The suffering, as awful as it is, is temporary. These earthly bodies are mere tents to house us until we are freed from this side and welcomed into the perfection that awaits.

Until then, what are we to do for those around us who are sick and without earthly hope? How do we watch them struggle day after day without allowing ourselves to fall into a pit of despair ourselves or turn our backs on the One who holds the future?

We need to find our peace in knowing that the surpassing power belongs to God, and that He is in control... which is hard sometimes to accept as well. I’ve spent many a night begging the Lord to heal my husband—knowing he can—and I would be lying if I didn’t say that I haven’t shaken a fist a time or two.

The only thing we can do is offer as much comfort as they will accept, and continue to pray for a miracle. As we open ourselves up, the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies, giving us the extra power to continue to walk alongside those we love.
