Maintenance Matters

Snow, ice, and cold temperatures are a thing of the past. Moving into the balmy days of spring, I’ve got lots of projects planned.

We moved into our house 15 years ago, and it’s time to do some maintenance work. Carpet needs to be replaced and everything from walls to trim could stand a fresh coat of paint. We’ve got plenty to keep us busy. Although it will take hard work, I know the effort will be worth it.

Because I live in my house and have plenty of other things to occupy my time, it’s easy to walk right by something that needs to be taken care of without even noticing. Over time, the stain, ding, or smudge becomes familiar, and I no longer notice it.

A comparison

My spiritual life can be a lot like my house. Performing regular maintenance can be tedious and time-consuming. Instead of taking care of things immediately, I promise myself I’ll get to it another day.

As time goes by, I get desensitized to things that don’t line up with God’s Word (click to tweet): selfishness, a bad attitude, the pride that comes knocking at my door.

Getting a jump start

Here are 3 things that helped me get a jump start on maintaining my spiritual health:

1. Stay in regular communication with God: Just like a relationship with a friend, God wants me to talk to Him about what’s going on in my life.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. Philippians 4:6

2. Keep a short account with the Lord: I need to be quick to ask forgiveness when I sin.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

3. Find an accountability partner: Being responsible for my actions helps me give more thought to what I do.

Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2

Hard work is required to maintain my spiritual life and to see growth. But it will be well-worth it!

Are you in need of a spiritual overhaul? What step will you take to begin some maintenance work on your spiritual life?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for reminding me of the importance of maintaining my spiritual life. I admit I often get distracted and allow things into my life that don’t line up with Your Word. Forgive me. Help me be quick to talk to You and ask forgiveness. Point me in the direction of the accountability partner You have for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
