When she looked in the mirror, all she could see was damaged goods.
When the people in her community looked at her, all they could see was damaged goods.
But when He looked her, all He saw was a trophy of grace. Samantha, or as I like to call her, “Sammie,” had been divorced five times. In her community, perhaps two divorces were tolerated by the religious community, but five? No way! And to add a thousand more pounds of shame and guilt to her life, everyone knew she was living with a man that was not her husband.
After five divorces, who wanted these damaged goods?
When Sammie looked in the mirror, all she saw was trailer trash.
But what she didn’t know was that when she met Him, He saw damaged goods that He wanted to recycle into a trophy of grace.
I’m sure you know by now that “He” is Jesus. He seeks out damaged goods.
And Sammie is the woman at the well in John 4:4-42.
How does Jesus recycle damaged goods? By giving those who realize they are damaged goods the gift of Himself, for He is the living water that springs up, producing a well of everlasting life.
You see, water gives us life and it cleans us.
Jesus freely gave the woman at the well His uncreated, boundless, eternal life. This also means she had a limitless source of power from which to live.
And Jesus gave her a holy shower of grace, wiping clean all her sins. She was eternally forgiven. Her sins were eternally forgotten, forever nailed to the King’s bloody cross.
He can do the same for you. He’s done the same for me.
