Jesus Perspective on Priorities

BUT MARTHA WAS BUSY WITH ALL THE WORK TO BE DONE. SHE WENT IN AND SAID, “LORD, DON’T YOU CARE THAT MY SISTER HAS LEFT ME ALONE TO DO ALL THE WORK? TELL HER TO HELP ME.” — LUKE 10:40

We often wear busyness as a badge of honor because busyness can equal productivity and usefulness. It's important to ask ourselves, however, whether busyness takes away from—or adds to—our faith journey.

When Jesus dined in the home of Mary and Martha, Martha prepared the meal for her special guest, while Mary (in a highly unusual move for a woman during biblical times) sat at Jesus' feet, listening to His teaching. Martha understandably felt frustrated that Mary wasn't helping her, and asked Jesus to rebuke her sister. However, Jesus told Martha that Mary had chosen the "better part." The Bible doesn't say what Martha replied, or how she felt. Perhaps she felt relieved.

Picture yourself receiving a text that an important person was coming to your house. You might scurry around, tidying the bathroom and plumping the couch cushions. If your guest said, "Sit down. Relax!" I don't want you to make a fuss over me. I just want to be with you," you would feel grateful. . .peaceful. . .and treasured.

Today, as you plan your to-do-list, prioritize time to sit and reflect on God's Word. Instead of rushing around to accomplish things you feel should be done, ask God what He wants you to do. You might feel relieved.

LET'S PRAY:

Jesus, give me Your perspective today as I plan my to-do's. Show me what's important to You, and help me to follow through. Amen.
