Is It Time to See a Counselor?

I think it’s time you seek a counselor. Don’t freak out. We all have issues, and I know just who we can turn to when we need some extra help—Jesus! I realize that may seem like a Sunday school answer, but He really is the best place to turn when we need guidance, advice, or comfort.

Isaiah 9:6 says, “ For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

This passage is describing Jesus. It lists “wonderful counselor” among the powerful names of God. We’re not talking about the kind of counselor who signs you up for gym class, here. Jesus is able to guide us through the ups and downs of this life. His advice is trustworthy and relevant to our lives.

It’s true; you can’t make an appointment to visit Jesus at His counseling office. Communication with Him may not feel as concrete as talking about your problems with friends and family members. But He has given us several real ways to tap in to His guidance.

Psalm 119:24 says, “ Your statutes are my delight, they are my counselors.”

God’s Word has the ability to offer us wise counsel, trustworthy advice and comfort in all seasons. If you don’t know what to do in a certain situation, read the Word! If you’re emotions are topsy turvy, read the Word! If the future seems scary, read the Word! There is no better place to run for help.

But that’s not all!

In John 14:16 Jesus says, “ And I will ask the Father and he will give you a counselor to be with you forever.”

In John 14:26 He says, “ But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

God has given us His Holy Spirit to counsel our hearts. We can lean in to that still small voice to guide us.

I think it is great to seek the input of other believers. It’s a wonderful idea to have a Christian mentor to advise you and hold you accountable. There are many situations where seeking professional help from a professional Christian counselor is a smart move. It’s even okay to ask for advice on forums like this blog. But, I want to remind you that you already have access to the best counselor in the world. Jesus is a Mighty Counselor! Make a habit of running to Him first when you need advice.
