Hold Your Tongue

“Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.” James 3:5

THINK

Like a horse led by a bit or a ship led by a rudder, many great things are controlled by small parts. If we are not careful, we can allow our tongues to dull the light we are called to be in the world. Just as it’s impossible for an orange tree to produce apples, it may be impossible for others to receive words of hope from us if all they hear are words that are careless, calloused and capricious. We need to consistently communicate in caring and careful ways that elevate Christ and help us to make a difference in the world for Him.

PRAY

Pray for God to help you control your words today. Before you speak, pray for wisdom and consider the effect your words have on the lives of those around you.

ACT

At the end of today, write out a list of things you said that stand out to you. Consider your words, thoughts, and deeds, and ask yourself, “Have I honored Christ in those ways today?”
